Starving Venezuelans pour across the border to Colombia, as Caracas braces for more protests following deadly clashes

In his passport photo, Carlos Naranjo Moreno is chubby-faced, a healthy twenty-something from a middle class Venezuelan family in the Andean town of Merida. Now, he is gaunt, his clothes hanging off his almost 6 foot 5 frame, ribs painfully visible when he removes his shirt.

The son of a university professor and himself a former chef at a government hotel who cooked for prominent Chavistas, Mr Naranjo seems an unlikely candidate for the growing ranks of Venezuelans forced to flee their country due to hunger.

Trump: UN Security Council must ready new sanctions on N.Korea

The UN Security Council must be prepared to impose new sanctions on North Korea amid escalating tensions over its missile and nuclear programs, US President Donald Trump said on Monday ahead of a lunch with ambassadors from countries on the UN council.

Trump, speaking to reporters, said the council also failed to act in response to a recent Syrian chemical weapons attack, which he called a "great disappointment."

Petraeus: World order under 'unprecedented threat'

Retired Gen. David Petraeus warned lawmakers on Wednesday that the world order created in part by the United States in the 20th century is under “unprecedented threat from multiple directions,” pointing to Russia, China, Islamist extremists and cyber threats.
Those threats are compounded by an America whose “resolve about its defense has become somewhat ambivalent,” he added.
“Americans should not take the current international order for granted,” Petraeus said at a House Armed Services Committee hearing. “It did not will itself into existence. We created it. Likewise, it is not naturally self-sustaining. We have sustained it. If we stop doing so, it will fray and, eventually, collapse."
The Russian ruling elite is hoping it would be able to negotiate a new world order with Trump.
The "new Yalta" would redistribute spheres of responsibility to recognised great powers. The Kremlin, of course, sees Russia as one of them (alongside with the US, China, and perhaps Europe).

              From a pro Russian site...

"Global Research" which frequently comes up on the first page of news site is Russian prop

Destabilization Plots Against Syria and Venezuela

In other words Trump is massively expanding every dirty war and destabilization campaign the Empire is involved in and doubtless in future months we will learn of countries now peaceful being thrown into chaos as a result of CIA/NED operations now being launched of which we have no idea. We can only hope that Russia and China are working on some plans of their own.
For now, however,  I must focus on the two countries which are among the most important fronts in World War 4:  Syria and Venezuela. Thankfully the initial attack on Syria was far from the all out war I feared. Brave soldiers and civilians were killed but the Syrians were able to get the air base back online the next day. However it sets a dangerous precedent for the US to attack Syria whenever the NATO death squads are loosing some battle.

White House calls some actions in Venezuela 'deplorable'

The Trump administration is monitoring the situation in Venezuela closely and has found some of the acts there "deplorable," the White House said on Friday.
"Some of the acts there have been deplorable and certainly something that we're monitoring very closely," White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters, without providing further detail.
"In terms of specific movement or engagement that we have at this point, I can't comment any further on that right now," she said.

Raul Castro's daughter: His successor may surprise Cubans
Mariela Castro's uncle Fidel led Cuba for a half century before he was succeeded as president by her father, Raul Castro, who has said he plans to step down in February.
Mariela Castro is a gay-rights advocate, member of Cuba's National Assembly and head of the country's institute of sex education. She has long been one of Cuba's most outspoken public figures, and her statements are widely perceived to bear her father's imprimatur.

Still, Cuba experts say Diaz-Canel has clearly been groomed for the job and the government would unlikely want to risk political stability by appointing someone with less legitimacy.

When it Comes to Venezuela, Trump Follows in Obama Footsteps

The Trump White House is largely following the policies put in place by U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration, Mark Feierstein, former senior director of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council said at a Thursday event in Washington, D.C. “I’m not accustomed to saying nice things about the Trump administration,” he said, but “their policy is on the right track. I think in many cases they’re building on what we did in the Obama administration,” he said, pointing in particular to sanctions put on Venezuelan officials by the Obama and Trump administrations.

By May, President Trump was meeting with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and condemning Maduro’s regime outright, demanding the socialists adhere to international human rights norms. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned all members of the Venezuelan Supreme Court for attempting to usurp the power of the National Assembly, installing themselves as the nation’s legislature. The United States also worked to galvanize anti-socialist sentiment at the Organization of American States (OAS) to invoke the regional organization’s democratic charter against Venezuela.
